Prevention to mortality statistics
According to WHO, every year 1.4 million children are born with congenital heart disease. In Ukraine about 5000 of kids are born with various congenital anomalies of the cardiovascular system. 40% of these children are in critical condition from their first hours, days and months of life.
The mortality rate for congenital heart defects isabout 80%. About 40% of children with congenital heart disease die before the age of 1 month.
However, the situation is not so hopeless. The majority of children with congenital heart diseases could be saved if a surgery is performed at a timely manner. Such life-saving surgeries are conducted in the Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the MoH of Ukraine.
Incredible medical effort
The Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the MoHof Ukraine is the main institution in the sector of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and the only tertiary care institution in Ukraine, where the treatment of the most complex congenital heart conditions is possible, regardless of the patient’s age. it is th eunique institution, th especialists of which are able to perform an operation for the children with complex heart deseases from the first hours of their life.
On average, over 40,000 patients per year are having consultations at the Center, more than 5,000 are hospitalized, and more than 3,000 are having surgeries. Such types of treatment became possible onle thanks to the money, raised during the 2017 Chestnut Run, after which the angiographic unit was bought. Consequently, before the year 2018 such surgeries couldn not be conducted at all.
Among the successfully treated young patients 55% are the kids of the first year of life, nearly 20% – infants (up to 30 days after birth). For the newborns such surgeries are conducted only upon critical indexes,in surcomstances when their life is doomed. Endovascular surgeries also are carried out when critical heart conditions are diagnosed. Therefore, up to 70% of newborns requiring urgent cardiosurgical care, get it in the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
Worthwhile achivements
Ukraininan Cardiac care Center is taking first place among the other Europian children cardiac centers due to the number and difficulty of conducted surgeries. The postsurgical mortality level is 1% comparing to 2-3% mortality level at the best Europien and aamerican clinics. These results had been achieved due to the active research work, continuous introduction of new medical and technological developments, high professional qualifications, responsibility and dedication of medical personnel.
Among the latest scientific and technological developments a considerable breakthroughs have been made in the field of prenatal diagnostics, which make it possible to detect the congenital heart diseas while the fetus in still in the womb, and therefor allows to prepare better for the following assistance. Without exaggeration, the world has recognized the Center’s achievements in transfusion technique using the umbilical cord blood instead of donor during the emergency surgeries performed on newborns in the first hours of life. Such acchivement of Dr. I.M. Emets was highly appreciated and now is being actively implemented in clinics all around the world.
The Chestnut Run Foundation has had a long and successful cooperation with the Center. The contribution of all of the Run’s participants is invaluable for sustaining the Center operatios and development. Primarily, we are talking about the acquisition of the latest and the most needed medical equipment. For instance, thanks to the runners’ participation in 2010 Chestnut Run the first device for membrane oxygenation, also called an “artificial heart” was purchased for the Center. In 2013 aws bought an innovative CS300 counterpulsation device (third in Ukraine) – the device that provides an adequate blood pressure at a time when little heart can not cope, and in 2019 – first in Ukraine electrophysialogical cardiac mapping system EnSite™.
This device is used for intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation, has a common mechanical device, which is currently used for the temporarily support of the heart pumping function of the in patients suffering from left ventricular failure. Nowadays its instalation is absolutely safe procedure for the patients and can be be carried out “in the patient’s bed”. An undoubted achievement of the introduction of the method is the ability to stabilize hemodynamics against the acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina. Also, the method deprives many patients of the need for angioplasty and ongoing treatment with thrombolytic agents.
In 2015, the ″Chestnut Run″ Charity Fund purchased A8 and M9500 cardiomonitors for the Center, and also paid for a number of necessary diagnostic and repair work for the clinic’s equipment for a total amount of over 1,000,000 hryvnias. The funds for this were collected by the participants of the 23rd “Chestnut Run”, and also transmitted by the Inter TV channel and FC Dynamo as part of their charity initiatives.
In 2016, the funds raised by the participants of the “Chestnut Run” became part of the sum needed to replace the x-ray tubes in the angiographic unit. This device is the “gold standard” for examining patients and performing operations without an incision. Every day up to 10 children were examined and operated on this unit.
In 2017, the sum of donations f exceeded one million or the first time and amounted up to 1,500,000 UAH, and in 2018 – 2,000,000 UAH.
In 2019 – 2,935,600 hryvnias, which were transferred: 2,800,000 UAH to the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, 100,000 UAH to the V.P. Filatov Institute for Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy (Odessa), 35,600 UAH – to the Happy Paw Foundation.
For the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery:
The Department of Electrophysiology and X-ray Surgical Treatment for Heart Rhythm Disorders received the long-awaited equipment – the EnSite ™ Electrophysiological Cardion Mapping System. The cost of the system is 6,200,000 UAH. More than 4 millions were raised during three years (2017, 2018, 2019) on the “Chestnuts Run” . The remaining amount was transferred by the Children’s Heart International Charitable Fund.
The KEYTER KWE-3060-RNS4W chiller was purchased for 967 000 UAH. It provides cooling of liquid helium, which is located in the MRI unit (for uninterrupted operation of the device) and prevents the increase in pressure and the release of helium into the air.
Also we are expecting from the Center an information concerning the object of acquisition for th esecond part of the sum raised during the 27th Run, more specifically 1 310 000 UAH.
V.P. Filatov Institute for Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy (Odessa) creates the Center for the Prevention of Child Blindness. To open the Center, repair works will be carried out in 2020 at the expense of the Run participants.
Happy Paw Foundation acquired carts, buckets, a welding machine and flea and tick treatment for Gostomel animal shelter.
Participants of the “Chestnut Run” have supported the Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine since 2002.
During this time, more than $ 680,000 was raised, for which the necessary equipment and supplies were purchased for the recipient.
The year 2019 – a record number of participants,
the largest amount of a charity check, three recipients,
20,000 saved lives!
20745
2935600 UAH
50000
participants
aid for the recipients
people on Maidan Nezalezhnosti square in 4 hours
An interesting coincidence that every participant can be proud of: in 2019, more than 20,000 philanthropists were registered,
just such is a number of babies saved during the support of the Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery!
In 2020, for the second part of the contributions of the participants of the 27th “Chestnut Run”, a new anesthesia-breathing apparatus A7 (Mindray) worth UAH 1,315,000 was purchased. The main function of the device is to carry out artificial lung ventilation. The full set of resuscitation ventilation modes meets the needs at all stages of anesthesia. The versatility of this device makes it possible to use it in intensive care units and in conventional departments. At the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, the device will be actively used to perform at least 2 operations a day.
With the funds raised by the participants of the 28th “Chestnut Run” (2021), managed to buy an incubator (the cost of which is 1,250,000 UAH). Thanks to the equipment, the medical staff of the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine saves newborns with complex heart defects every day!
The incubator is special equipment in which constant temperature, humidity and necessary saturation of air with oxygen are supported. Special devices allow you to organize the care of the child, to do various manipulations without removing the child from the incubator.
